Balloon Chic Book Club 01: Summer 2020 Reads
Nothing quite like a great book to keep you company on those summer days when lounging at the beach summarizes an entire week's worth of plans. We know it has been a tough few months. We know you feel stressed, wound up, mentally overworked, the list goes on. Now is the time to kick back and catch up on some long overdue reading, ideally under a palm tree, with a mason jar of iced coffee in hand. *If there are no palm trees around, you can at least grab yourself some good coffee. Like right now. Get up and make one.*
1) The Word is Murder - Anthony Horowitz
When it comes to summer reads, there's nothing like a good who-dun-it. A clever, droll, and highly entertaining murder mystery ensues when former Detective Inspector Hawthorne approaches Anthony Horowitz - yes, the real author has actually written himself into the story- and requests that he write a book about his most recent investigation: A woman plans her own funeral, and dies shortly after. The initially reluctant Horowitz finds himself drawn deeper into the plot as the book progresses. He can't help wanting to know more about the crime at hand and the ever- cryptic Hawthorne, who is a mystery in and of himself. Needless to say, his curiosity brings him face-to-face with dark secrets, danger and death. Detective novels tend to get repetitive once you've read a few, but this one is a page-turner. If you're craving something fun and exciting to read, this may be the book for you!
2) Women Who Run With the Wolves - Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Here at Balloon Chic we believe that little girls aren't little at all. Strength, courage, resilience; that's what they are made of. "Women Who Run With the Wolves" is an oracle from one who knows this all too well. Written by psychoanalyst Dr. Estes, it tells through multicultural folk tales and myths of a wild and natural creature, of a powerful force filled with good instincts, passionate creativity and ageless knowing. Its name is Wild Woman, it resides within all of us and it has been an endangered species for a very long time. It is our responsibility as women to vivify it and restore the ruins of our once untethered unconscious.
Undoubtedly a tougher read than the previous suggestion, this one will take longer to get through and longer still to process and understand. But oh is it worth it. In the words of Maya Angelou, "everyone who can read should read this book". So pick up a pen and a notebook, get comfy and prepare to delve deep within.
We hope you will enjoy these Book Club suggestions as much as we have! Till next time, stay classy everyone ;).
All our love, The Balloon Chic team x.
